Sinking Funds: The Simple Trick for Big Expenses

A new laptop, a yearly software subscription, car insurance, a family wedding. These costs are not emergencies: you know they are coming. Yet they often feel like emergencies because they arrive all at once. Sinking funds fix that.

What is a sinking fund?

A sinking fund is money you set aside a little at a time for a known future expense. If your laptop costs 1,200 and you expect to replace it in 24 months, you put 50 a month into a "laptop" fund. When the time comes, the money is already there.

Sinking fund vs emergency fund

An emergency fund is for things you cannot predict, such as illness or losing a major client. A sinking fund is for things you can predict. Keeping them separate means your emergency fund stays full for real emergencies.

Useful sinking funds for freelancers

  • Equipment: laptop, phone, camera, monitor.
  • Yearly subscriptions: software, domains, hosting, professional memberships.
  • Holidays: as a freelancer you are not paid for time off, so plan for it.
  • Training: courses, conferences and books that keep your skills sharp.
  • Gifts and celebrations: birthdays, festivals and weddings.
  • Car or home repairs: things you know will need attention eventually.

How to calculate the monthly amount

For each fund, write down the cost and the number of months until you need it, then divide. For example, a 600 holiday in 8 months needs 75 a month. If you keep the money in an account that pays interest, the savings goal calculator gives a slightly more accurate figure.

Setting them up

Many banks let you create named savings pots inside one account. If yours does not, use one savings account and a simple spreadsheet listing how much belongs to each fund. Automate a monthly transfer on the day you pay yourself.

If you cannot fund them all

Start with the funds that would cause the most stress if they were missing, usually tax, equipment you need for work and yearly bills. Add others as your income grows. Even partial funding is better than none: half the cost saved means half the cost does not land on a credit card.

Summary

Sinking funds turn big, predictable costs into small monthly amounts. For freelancers with uneven income, they are one of the easiest ways to reduce money stress.
